Lymphogranuloma venereum: here to stay?

چکیده
In 2003, this journal published a report from The Netherlands of an unusual presentation of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) in a man with HIV infection. That article was the first evidence of a significant re-emergence of the disease in gay men. Over the following 5 years, articles in this journal and others have documented cases and clusters of LGV from many countries in Europe and North America as well as from Australia and New Zealand. The cases have been in gay men, many of whom are coinfected with HIV and some with hepatitis C. The spectrum of clinical presentation has been wide, the majority having proctitis, rather fewer with classical urogenital syndrome and others being asymptomatic. Expanded diagnostic capacity, greater awareness among clinicians and patients, and new forms of surveillance have undoubtedly played a role in increasing detection of the disease.

Although the literature on this subject is already quite considerable there is still some doubt as to the exact value of the different laboratory procedures available for the diagnosis of lymphogranuloma venereum. This does not, of course, apply to the demonstration of lymphogranuloma venereum virus in material from a suspected case of this disease, for this, as in any infective process, is of ...
متن کاملThe Antigenic Relationship of the Viruses of Meningopneumonitis and Lymphogranuloma Venereum
Animals recovered from infection with the viruses of lymphogranuloma venereum, meningopneumonitis, and psittacosis, were reinoculated in crossimmunity tests with these viruses. In mice immunized by intracerebral or intranasal inoculation a reciprocal partial cross-immunity between the viruses of lymphogranuloma venereum and meningopneumonitis was demonstrated. In preliminary experiments, simila...
متن کاملLymphogranuloma venereum causing a persistent genital ulcer.
Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is a sexually transmitted cause of inguinal lymphadenopathy and proctocolitis. We report a patient with a persistent genital ulcer due to LGV (serovar L2b), an unusual presentation among US men who have sex with men. Lymphogranuloma venereum should be considered when evaluating persistent genital ulcers, and LGV-specific testing should be sought.
